September 8th-12th

 Literacy:

We started working on literacy centres! This week we practiced independent reading, buddy reading, and literacy games.

First Chapter Features:

First chapter features is a time where Miss Warkentin reads the first chapter of a novel to students. After the first chapter students fill in a form that includes information such as the title, author, genre, theme, and predictions about what might happen in the rest of the story. This is an opportunity for students to be exposed to genres of stories they may not otherwise pick at the the library and get them excited for reading!

This week we read the first chapter of The Magicians Nephew by C.S. Lewis

Bookmarks:

Students started working on personalized bookmarks which we will be using in class this year!

Numeracy:

Basic facts:

We have been practicing basic facts for addition and subtraction. Basic facts are foundational for elementary math because fluency with them frees up working memory, allowing students to focus on more complex concepts. This automatic recall builds a strong mathematical foundation, boosts student confidence, and prevents the cognitive overload that can lead to math anxiety. You can practice basic facts at home too!

Place value:

We reviewed and explored place value up to 1,000,000 including decimal places up to the thousandths.

Social Emotional / Art:

We started talking about what it means to be a good team! We discussed how everyone has different skills, gifts, and attributes that they bring to make our class amazing. Students then wrote three positive words to describe themselves on a sticky note and then stuck it on to the chart paper. From here we were able to see all the different positive attributes that make up our class.

Students began to work on their I AM art.

Science:
We started learning about the differences between weather and climate and about the different climate zones on earth.

Three main climate zones we focused on this week were Polar Zone, Temporal Zone, and Tropical Zone.

Field study:

Sit spots:

We did our first sit spot this week! Students practiced being in the moment and observing their surroundings. Students drew six zoomed in pictures of what they saw.
