September 22-26

 Literacy :

Paragraph writing: Students have continued working on writing paragraphs this week. This weeks topics were Class Job Applications, Fall Equinox and First Month of School.

Students used this checklist to edit their work:

Numeracy :

We continued working on place value. This week we introduced the concept of greater than and less than using numbers with thousandths.

This song has been stuck in my head all week so please enjoy our current favorite song at home too!

Students played two different math games to practice saying the numbers out loud and identify which number is greater.

Science:

Students continued tracking the weather for various cities in the five climate zones we have been learning about.

Current events:

We started the week by going on a community walk with the other grade 5 classes to celebrate the fall equinox. Students sat ad journaled about their observation of the environment.

Orange Shirt Day

On Tuesday we started talking about respect. When do we feel respected and how can we show respect to others at school?

Students then coloured buffalo and wrote how they feel respected on it. They then added it to a school wide art display in the Prairie.

Students brainstormed ideas of how children of residential schools would have felt verses how students at Northern Lights School should feel. Students then wrote their positive words on an orange ribbon.

On Friday, we met with our grade 3 buddies to tie our orange ribbons on the fence outside our school to show our commitment to reconciliation and participate in the buffalo walk.

Youth Link Presentation:
Students learned about internet safety! We talked about online bullying, keeping personal information private, and the dangers of meeting/talking to people online that you have never met. Students also learned that the minimum age to use most social media platforms is 13 years old!

Art

We finished art from last week and started on new project!

Important information:

No School Monday or Tuesday! Have a fabulous long weekend!
