 Literacy:

Students wrote thank you notes to parent council for funding our recent field trip and to parent volunteers for coming with us! 

 






We continued working on procedural writing. 


We did lots of word work focusing on prefixes and suffixes. 


Math:

More adding and subtracting! 






This week we focused on two new strategies: open number lines and "take a one." I have put a series of YouTube videos on Google Classroom that explain the various strategies so that students can practice at home if they need to :) 









Social:

We have been looking at geographical features of ancient civilizations and the pros and cons of them!


Art:

SPIRIT DAY: Wednesday Winter Wear Day – Wear anything festive (sweaters, t-shirts, 

hats, socks, etc.)

SPIRIT DAY: Friday PJ Day / Movie Day

REMINDER: NO CELL PHONE USE AT SCHOOL

Cell Phones, Smart Phones, Mobile Phones, Mobile Devices, Social Media, Cyber Safety, Teenagers, Teens, Friends

Just a reminder that students should not have cell phones out while on the school grounds from the time they arrive in the morning until they have left after school. Students should also not be taking pictures of each other while on school grounds / posting pictures of each other online for privacy reasons. Please see the below that was sent out last year and the beginning of this school year for more details.

CBE K-9 PERSONAL MOBILE DEVICE POLICY

CBE restrictions on Personal Mobile Devices & Social Media Use in Schools are still in place this year. This policy complies with the Ministerial Order provided by the Government of Alberta from June 2024 based on survey feedback provided by families.

The CBE cares about the mental health and well-being of students. Restricting access to personal mobile devices and social media is expected to improve student achievement and learning outcomes. CBE strongly recommends students simply leave their devices at home, because in most cases, personal mobile devices are not needed to support student learning.


ARRIVING TO SCHOOL DRESSED FOR CHANGING WEATHER

Winter Dog, Animal, Snow, Cold, Frosty

The weather is supposed to be cold, then warmer, then cold again so students should be arriving at school with proper outdoor clothing. We ARE outside several times a day on all days that are not -20 degrees. (And may be outside for short periods of time on days that are -20) so students need to be prepared.

We had a fabulous first week of grade 5! This week we focused on building friendships and creating a safe and caring classroom community. Here's a look at some of the activities we worked on.  Class Code of Conduct:  We brainstormed things that makes a safe/caring classroom and then together, we made a class code of conduct. What makes me, me art! Get to know you bingo: Acting out scenarios. Is it disagreement, rude, mean or bullying?  All about me questions: DIVERSITY word work challenge: Students worked in partners to unscramble the letters and make as many different words as possible.  Teamwork building challenge: What are some things that make a good team vs a bad team? Welcome to Grade 5!

 Welcome! We are so excited to be starting the 2025-2026 school year! This year, our whole school will continue to use Blogger to make regular agenda posts.  To make it easier for you, you can add the blog right on the home screen of you phone or iPad, or tablet. We hope this makes communication between homw and school easier and opens great conversations betweenyou and your child.  The CBE and Mrs. Brinson will be communicatinf information to you through School Messenger emails titled, "Northern Lights News for___". These weekly emails will include a link to the Northern Lights School Website so messages can be translated into any language.  I am so excited to see you all next week!

 Literacy: We started working on literacy centres! This week we practiced independent reading, buddy reading, and literacy games.  First Chapter Features: First chapter features is a time where Miss Warkentin reads the first chapter of a novel to students. After the first chapter students fill in a form that includes information such as the title, author, genre, theme, and predictions about what might happen in the rest of the story. This is an opportunity for students to be exposed to genres of stories they may not otherwise pick at the the library and get them excited for reading! This week we read the first chapter of The Magicians Nephew by C.S. Lewis  Bookmarks: Students started working on personalized bookmarks which we will be using in class this year! Numeracy: Basic facts: We have been practicing basic facts for addition and subtraction.
