 Literacy:

We started working on story writing! This week students were given a picture prompt to write about. Students learned and practiced using story writing elements to make their writing interesting such as adding how characters feel, dialogue, sound effects, details, and strong verbs. 

Math:

Students continued practicing addition, subtraction, and estimating. They also did math centers and finished the week with a Show What You Know.

 


Science:

We started buoyancy this week. Students brainstormed questions they had about buoyancy and hypothesis' they have for each question.



Social:
We learned about geographical features of Ancient China. We then started discussing why civilizations may have to adapt, move, or modify.

Restart Presentation:
Every Thursday for the next 9 weeks students will participate in Restart sessions.

Today in RESART, students learned about Building Connections. During this session we discussed the importance of friendship and the characteristics that we look for in a friend. We also discussed some barriers that can prevent us from feeling connected with others, or things that may make us feel like we don’t belong. We focused on ways to build connection and belonging with others. 

We discussed the impact that judgment can have on our relationships and the importance of being aware of our judgements. The group explored how to move past barriers to connection, including judgment, stereotypes, and past experiences. 

We ended our session with a discussion surrounding the choice we have either to focus on judgments others have placed on us, or the ones we have put on others and ourselves. We also discussed the importance of focusing on the positives and building strong connections with others.

February 4 – Winter Walk Day (Classes will share details of what they are doing for this day closer to the date)

February 11 – SPIRIT DAY: Pink or Red Day

February 11 – Popcorn Fundraiser delivery (Orders can be placed at healthyhunger.ca up to February 7)

February 12 and 13 – NO SCHOOL – Teachers’ Convention

February 16 – NO SCHOOL – Family Day

Week 1!

We had a fabulous first week of grade 5! This week we focused on building friendships and creating a safe and caring classroom community. Here's a look at some of the activities we worked on.  Class Code of Conduct:  We brainstormed things that makes a safe/caring classroom and then together, we made a class code of conduct. What makes me, me art! Get to know you bingo: Acting out scenarios. Is it disagreement, rude, mean or bullying?  All about me questions: DIVERSITY word work challenge: Students worked in partners to unscramble the letters and make as many different words as possible.  Teamwork building challenge: What are some things that make a good team vs a bad team?  Literacy: We started working on literacy centres! This week we practiced independent reading, buddy reading, and literacy games.  First Chapter Features: First chapter features is a time where Miss Warkentin reads the first chapter of a novel to students. After the first chapter students fill in a form that includes information such as the title, author, genre, theme, and predictions about what might happen in the rest of the story. This is an opportunity for students to be exposed to genres of stories they may not otherwise pick at the the library and get them excited for reading! This week we read the first chapter of The Magicians Nephew by C.S. Lewis  Bookmarks: Students started working on personalized bookmarks which we will be using in class this year!
