Jan 5-9

 Literacy:

This week students wrote paragraphs about their winter breaks and New Year Resolution procedural writing. Lots of students chose to write about helping out more at home (you're welcome parents!). They also worked hard on editing their writing with a partner to check for mistakes and add details to their writing.

During literacy centers this week, students started typing practice and email writing.

Math:

We worked on lots of rounding and estimating this week! Students should be able to round numbers to various place values from millions all the way down to thousandths. Students should also be able to determine if a given estimation is reasonable or not.

We also worked on mat stations!

Science:

We discussed traditional technologies of flight and compared them to modern day technology.

Social:

We continued on learning about geographical features that impacted ancient civilizations. This week we learned about Ancient Mesoamerica (specifically the Mayan Empire) and Ancient India.

Art:

Students explored Canva to create 2026 mood boards. The goal was to have students reflect about the things that make them happy and what they are hoping for or looking forward to this year.

Field Study:
We went outside to explore and describe in detail signs of winter and talked about the winter solstice.

Important announcements:

There are lots of overdue library books. Please make sure your child brings back their library books this week :)

January 22 – Mr. Pretzel Treat Day / Opa Fun Lunch Day (order at healthyhunger.ca before January 17 if participating)

January 30 – No classes (Non-Instruction Day)
